Peter Sellars’ Ritualization of the St. Matthew Passion
…formances like this could lead to reclaiming this work for all to perform, not just the Baroque specialists. This is only available directly from the Berlin Philharmonic’s online shop. Ordering and shipment to the USA is a breeze; the DVD and Blu-Ray discs are region-free. If you want to see some of the performance first, there’s an excerpt at NPR, as well as a trailer on YouTube. The interview with Peter Sellars and Simon Halsey about this perfor… Continue reading

Leonard Bernstein at 100 – Mass
…ly do need to do this as a theatre piece to pull it off completely. A stand-up-and-sing concert version just isn’t going to make the full impact. Neither will a recording, but for most people that is the best opportunity available to experience this music. I think Marin Alsop’s recording with Jubilant Sykes and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is the finest I have heard. I’ve had the great privilege of having sung Bernstein’s vocal music with two… Continue reading
The Implementation of Etude, An Integrated and Interactive Document Production System
…cess by which an operator interacts with a system to produce a document, encompassing both the editing and formatting functions. The design of the user interface plays the dominant role in achieving this end. Etude seeks to lower the anxiety factor typically associated with word processing and other computer-based document production systems by providing a command structure that is accessible and comprehensible to a novice user, together with a va… Continue reading

Building a User-Derived Interface
…ors Society, Boston, December 12-15, 1983, pages 24-27. Abstract Many human-computer interfaces are designed with the assumption that the user must adapt to the system, that users must be trained and their behavior altered to fit a given interface. The research presented here proceeds from the alternative assumption: Novice behavior is inherently sensible, and the computer system can be made to adapt to it. Specifically, a measurably easy-to-use i… Continue reading

…available online. This gives a scholarly summary of MusicXML practice in the music industry as of four years ago. It is interesting to see what has changed and what has stayed the same. MusicXML has moved from version 1.1 to 2.0, and the number of supporting applications has grown from over 50 to over 120. MusicXML’s role in music distribution has started to grow – see our list of MusicXML sites – but the format still is mostly used for interchang… Continue reading

New Was (Not Was) Compilation: Pick of the Litter 1980-2010
The amazing, beyond-category band Was (Not Was) has a terrific new compilation out that covers their entire 30-year recording career: from the first single “Wheel Me Out” to their latest album Boo! How can one CD cover a 30 year career? Well, 18 of those 30 years were on hiatus while Don and David Was went their separate ways, with Don Was becoming a very successful record producer. Another 5 years were lost to record company disputes between the… Continue reading
