A Selected Bibliography of Original Concert Band Music

Part I (Adler – Husa) originally published in Journal of Band Research, 18 (2), Spring 1983, 12-35.  Part II (Jacob – Zdechlik) originally published in Journal of Band Research, 19 (1), Fall 1983, 26-51.

Copyright © 1983 by the Journal of Band Research and included here with permission. The Journal of Band Research is published for the American Bandmasters Association by Troy State University Press, Troy, Alabama 36082. Composer dates and typographical errors have been updated from the print publication.

The following is a selected bibliography of writings relating to specific pieces of music originally written for concert band or large wind ensemble.* The material listed includes such diverse sources as doctoral theses, articles from the Journal of Band Research and The Instrumentalist, reviews of new band music, and record reviews.  These sources vary in the depth of information provided — some of the record reviews may summarize their opinions in a sentence or two — and also encompass a broad variety of attitudes towards band music, but all should be available in larger libraries.

The bibliography is ordered by composer, and then by pieces in approximate order of composition. The year listed beside a piece refers to the year when the composition was completed, unless prefaced by “fp.,” indicating year of first performance, or “c.,” indicating year of copyright.

A few remarks about sources are in order.  Most of the theses listed here were found through “A Bibliography of Dissertations Relative to the Study of Bands and Band Music” by Frank J. Cipolla (Journal of Band Research 15, Fall 1979, 1-31). All of the entries from these were made on the basis of abstracts appearing in Dissertation Abstracts International mentioning the particular composition in question.  The reader will also note a number of entries from Smith and Stoutamire’s book Band Music Notes. The interested reader may consult this valuable reference source. Music reviews from The Instrumentalist and The School Musician are generally limited to more recent reviews of major compositions. Some of this work was supported by the MIT Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, under the supervision of John Corley.
