Coming Up: The Barber of Seville
Next weekend I will be singing in the chorus of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville at Fremont Opera. Jonathon Field is stage director and David Sloss is conductor. This is the same artistic team that I have performed with in Mahagonny and The Rake’s Progress at West Bay Opera. The publicity describes this as a semi-staged production, but as far as I can see the only semi- is the absence of full sets and costumes. The staging for both principals and… Continue reading

If you come to the show please come backstage afterwards to say hello. Enjoy this rare chance to experience Turandot up close and personal!… Continue reading

Coming Up: Dutoit Conducts Poulenc and Berlioz
We have a great program coming up with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus! Maestro Charles Dutoit will be conducting two wonderful French choral works: Poulenc’s Stabat Mater and Berlioz’s Te Deum. Erin Wall is the soprano soloist in the Poulenc and Paul Groves is the tenor soloist in the Berlioz. The Pacific Boychoir directed by Kevin Fox and organist Jonathan Dimmock also join in on the Berlioz. Performances are Wednesday through Sunday except f… Continue reading

Coming Up: Missa solemnis, Take 2
…sical repertoire — it is so productive to get away from it for a while and come back to it from a renewed and refreshed perspective. In music we can work with a longer timeframe than in engineering, but the process sure feels similar to me. Coming back to the piece allows for both greater depth in interpretation and greater polish in performance. There are only a few tickets left for these two performances, so get them quickly. I think these will… Continue reading
Coming Up – Sousa’s El Capitan
…ous talents. My role is Pozzo, Don Medigua’s loyal chamberlain. Pozzo is a comic tenor, and the first role I’ve had that combines dialog and solo singing – in this case, much more dialog than singing. It was created in New York by another short actor, Alfred Klein, brother of Charles Klein who wrote the El Capitan book. I am grateful to Paul, Jeff, and Neil for giving me this opportunity. Pozzo has some very funny lines which I hope the audience w… Continue reading
MakeMusic Universal File Format Comes to SmartMusic
…le format (.smp). Because the new file format is both forward and backward compatible, we will no longer have these incompatibilities between Finale and SmartMusic versions. The current version of SmartMusic will be able to read accompaniments created in future versions of Finale. Just as before, the current version of Finale will be able to create accompaniments for later versions of SmartMusic. This new file format is a key part of the moderniza… Continue reading

Coming Up: Mason Bates’ Mass Transmission
…s by other composers have still tended to be either all click track or all free, not such a fascinating combination of the two. Along these lines, it’s been very interesting watching the interaction between Mason Bates and Donato Cabrera. Maestro Cabrera’s instincts are sometimes to free up the vocal singing in places. However, he is letting composer Bates guide him back to following the alternation between free and locked as specified in the scor… Continue reading

Coming Up: Debussy
…music in a semi-staged production. The work becomes a multi-media pageant complete with narrator, soloists, chorus, and orchestra. If you’ve seen SFS semi-staged productions before, you know they can make remarkable use of the Davies Symphony Hall space. You can see the projections in the publicity photo above, but there’s more to the staging than that. Anne Patterson is the director and designer; Michael Tilson Thomas is the conductor; Frederica… Continue reading
