The researcher is present during the use of the software in the context of the user’s actual work setting and work task. The researcher can both observe and question the user about his o… Continue reading

Seven Experiences with Contextual Field Research
…troduction Contextual field research is a growing area of interest in human-computer interaction. At the CHI ’88 conference, Karen Holtzblatt, Sandy Jones, and myself hosted a Special Interest Group on “Field Research Techniques for Building Usable Products.” This overview of seven different experiences with contextual field research techniques grew out of the network we established at the conference. Coming Up: El Niño
…tellanos and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. The San Francisco Symphony was a co-commissioner of this work, and I have been lucky enough to hear it twice. The first time was at the US premiere in San Francisco; Kent Nagano conducted with soloists Dawn Upshaw, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, and Willard White. This was with Peter Sellars’ semi-staging and film. The performances and staging were great, but like many others I found the film to be a distraction…. Continue reading
Coming Up: Dutoit Conducts Poulenc and Berlioz
…f chorus singing, this concert is for you. The chorus sings practically non-stop throughout both works; the solo roles are fairly small and there is not much music for the orchestra alone. If you are a fan of the combined colors of organ, orchestra, and chorus, the Berlioz Te Deum offers lots of that. The Poulenc has lots of a cappella singing. Both works are beautiful but are not that frequently performed. This will be the first time the San Fran… Continue reading

Coming Up: Missa solemnis, Take 2
…thoven’s Missa solemnis. Our soloists will be soprano Laura Claycomb, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, tenor Michael Fabiano, and bass-baritone Shenyang. They are sounding fabulous in rehearsals, both on their own as well as in their wild and intricate ensembles. The concerts start with the chorus singing the Kyrie, Gloria, and Agnus Dei from Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli, conducted by Ragnar Bohlin. The performances are Friday and Saturday, May 10… Continue reading
Coming Up – Sousa’s El Capitan
…t 3-minute marches who railed against padding of musical material actually compose a really good 2-hour operetta? And are the tunes in the El Capitan march actually in the operetta? The answer is yes, Sousa could compose a really good operetta. This was by far his biggest stage hit, running for 4 years in a row in New York and on national tours. The famous El Capitan march contains some of the best tunes from the show, of course, but there’s lots… Continue reading
