Coming Up: Carmen
…and Jason Detweiler, and am very much looking forward to their portrayals of Don José and Escamillo, respectively. Opera in a small house like West Bay is a lot different than at the big houses. The performance is more intimate, and the passion really comes across when you aren’t so far removed from the stage. Performances are October 17, 19, 25, 26 at the Lucie Stern Theater in Palo Alto. The Friday and Saturday performances are at 8:00 pm, the S… Continue reading

Coming Up: Ravel and Bernstein at San Francisco Symphony
…so the program changed. You may have heard the chorus sing Chichester Psalms to conclude last month’s Spring Choral Concert, but that was the reduced instrumentation for organ, harp, and percussion. With full orchestra it is even more glorious. The Ravel of course is one of the most beautiful works ever written. The Suite No. 2 that is often done comes from the third act of the ballet. In this concert we are doing the entire wonderful score. Perf… Continue reading
Coming Up: Swedish Choral Music at San Francisco Symphony
…to the world of light “to behold once again the stars”. The work is a tour-de-force of 20th century choral writing. The soprano, tenor, and bass sections sometimes have 8-way divisions (the altos, alas, just 4-way), and at any one point in the score there may be 16 independent lines throughout the chorus. This is used for many effects: tone clusters and dissonant harmony depicting the Hellish scenario, great bitonal washes of sound, moving toward… Continue reading
Coming Up: An American "Der Freischütz"
…d some American cultural references to the staging that cleverly parallel the German references of the work. I don’t want to give away any surprises. But I will say that this production will not fall into either of the twin pitfalls of dusty museum-piece staging or been-there-done-that Eurotrash updating. Der Freischütz will be performed on February 19, 21, 27, and 28 at the Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto. The performances on Friday the 19th and… Continue reading
Coming Up: The Marriage of Figaro
…d Elizabeth Baker as Cherubino. The production is directed by Olivia Stapp and conducted by Jonathan Khuner. I will be singing and dancing in the chorus. And yes, there will be an orchestra and supertitles. Come enjoy Mozart’s funny, poignant, and beautiful masterwork in a lovely park setting. The amphitheater is right off the end of Somerset Place in Berkeley. And did I mention it was free?… Continue reading
Coming Up: Palo Alto Chamber Chorus
…hamber choruses back in Boston, but have yet to find a good fit with a full-time chamber chorus locally. So I am really enjoying our rehearsals with the 15 singers of the Palo Alto Chamber Chorus. Most of the group also sings (now or in the recent past) with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus or West Bay Opera. We’ll be singing Mozart’s Missa brevis in D, K. 194 with the Baroque Concerto Ensemble under James Frieman’s direction. The concert is Sund… Continue reading
Coming Up: Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights
…of melody in contemporary opera. This opera does not fall into the all-too-common trap of having most of the vocal music written in a recitative style. Instead it is full of melodies, often quite upbeat and jaunty, so it is very possible you will leave humming at least one of the tunes. Rounding out the program are songs from another Ahlstrom work, America, I love you on texts by e. e. cummings. Performances are Friday, October 10 and 17 at 8:00… Continue reading

Coming Up: ISMIR 2008
…day tutorial on “Symbolic Data for Music Applications” by Eleanor Selfridge-Field and Craig Sapp will include MusicXML, of course. On Thursday, Joachim Ganseman, Paul Scheunders, and Wim D’haes have a poster on “Using XQuery on MusicXML Databases for Musicological Analysis.” A few other papers and posters have MusicXML working behind the scenes, perhaps more so than in past years. While most of ISMIR focuses on issues of audio music retrieval rath… Continue reading
