New Was (Not Was) Compilation: Pick of the Litter 1980-2010

…on hiatus while Don and David Was went their separate ways, with Don Was becoming a very successful record producer. Another 5 years were lost to record company disputes between their second and third albums. This still leaves us with 5 albums and several singles. Pick of the Litter covers this repertoire very nicely. The selected songs are very close to the sets that I’ve heard the band play the past few years in San Francisco and Anaheim. There… Continue reading

Coming Up: An American "Der Freischütz"

Yesterday was our first staging rehearsal for West Bay Opera‘s upcoming production of Der Freischütz. I was already excited about getting the opportunity to perform this German masterwork that is rarely done in the USA. The cast is fabulous, full of favorites from previous West Bay productions, especially from Dutchman. The chorus is as big (and strong) as you can put on the Lucie Stern stage. General director José Luis Moscovich will conduct. Th… Continue reading

"MusicXML in Commercial Applications" Now Online

My 2006 paper on “MusicXML in Commercial Applications“, published in Music Analysis East and West, is now available online. This gives a scholarly summary of MusicXML practice in the music industry as of four years ago. It is interesting to see what has changed and what has stayed the same. MusicXML has moved from version 1.1 to 2.0, and the number of supporting applications has grown from over 50 to over 120. MusicXML’s role in music distributio… Continue reading

…d Elizabeth Baker as Cherubino. The production is directed by Olivia Stapp and conducted by Jonathan Khuner. I will be singing and dancing in the chorus. And yes, there will be an orchestra and supertitles. Come enjoy Mozart’s funny, poignant, and beautiful masterwork in a lovely park setting. The amphitheater is right off the end of Somerset Place in Berkeley. And did I mention it was free?… Continue reading

Coming Up: Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights

…of melody in contemporary opera. This opera does not fall into the all-too-common trap of having most of the vocal music written in a recitative style. Instead it is full of melodies, often quite upbeat and jaunty, so it is very possible you will leave humming at least one of the tunes. Rounding out the program are songs from another Ahlstrom work, America, I love you on texts by e. e. cummings. Performances are Friday, October 10 and 17 at 8:00 p… Continue reading

Coming Up: Carmen

…nd am very much looking forward to their portrayals of Don José and Escamillo, respectively. Opera in a small house like West Bay is a lot different than at the big houses. The performance is more intimate, and the passion really comes across when you aren’t so far removed from the stage. Performances are October 17, 19, 25, 26 at the Lucie Stern Theater in Palo Alto. The Friday and Saturday performances are at 8:00 pm, the Sunday performances are… Continue reading

Coming Up: ISMIR 2008

Next week is the annual International Conference on Music Information Retrieval, known as ISMIR for short. It started out 8 years ago as a symposium in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Since then it has grown into a full-fledged conference, but the ISMIR name stuck. This year’s conference is at Drexel University in Philadelphia from September 14 to 18. I will be doing a demonstration of “Using MusicXML 2.0 to Create Symbolic Music Data Sets” on Thursday… Continue reading
